Beef patty with caramelized onions and gravy is a traditional Danish dish. In this recipe the patties are served on buns, as a sandwich, but you can also serve them with freshly boiled potatoes instead.

Ingredients

Creamy Onion Gravy

50 gram Butter

4 pcs. Onions, large

1 l Heavy cream 38%

1 tbsp. Fish sauce

1 tbsp. Soy sauce

Beef Patties

800 gram Minced beef

20 gram Butter

2 tsp. Salt

1 tsp. Pepper

To Serve

4 pcs. Buns , English Muffins or Burger Buns

4 tsp. Mustard

100 gram Pickled beetroot

4 tbsp. Tomato ketchup

100 gram Pickled cucumber

4 tbsp. Remoulade or mayo

1 pcs. Onions, chopped

4 tbsp. Fried onions

Steps

1
Prepare the onions

Heat a frying pan to 150 °C. Add the butter.

Peel the onions and cut them into ½ cm thin slices. Add them to the pan as you go. Cook for 30 minutes with the lid on. Stir regularly.

2
Shape the patties

Divide the meat into 4 portions of 200 g.

Shape them into balls and flatten them. Season with salt and pepper.

3
Make the sauce

Add the heavy cream, fish sauce and soy sauce to the pan with the onions. Simmer for 5 minutes at 100 °C.

If you only have one frying pan, pour the sauce into a bowl so you can use the pan to fry the patties. Remember to clean the pan before frying the patties.

4
Fry the patties

Add butter to the frying pan and heat to 185 °C.

Cook the patties for a total of 5 minutes. Cook for 1 minute on one side, then flip them over. Continue turning them every minute until they have cooked for a total of 5 minutes. After 5 minutes the patties will still be quite red inside, but they will finish cooking in the sauce.

Reduce the temperature and pour the sauce over the patties.

Let it simmer for 5 minutes.

In the meantime, prepare the buns, condiments, and garnishes for the sandwiches.

5
Assemble the sandwiches

Assemble the beef sandwich. Spread mustard on the bottom bun, then add beetroot slices, ketchup, sliced pickled cucumbers, remoulade or mayonnaise. Add a patty and a lot of the gravy. Then top with chopped raw onions and fried onions. Add the top bun or leave it off, if you prefer.
