About the system

Questions about the Ztove system

What is Ztove?

Ztove is a system that lets you control the temperature (± 1 °C) of your pots and pans.

Our cookware has built-in temperature sensors that connect with your Ztove cooktop. You can control the temperature via the Ztove app.

How does Ztove work?

The Ztove cooktop communicates with the built-in temperature sensors in the cookware.

Information from the cookware allows the cooktop to adjust the heat output automatically in real time.

We use a feed-forward regulation algorithm with our cookware model to ensure precise temperature control of ± 1° C.

Can I use my normal cookware on a Ztove cooktop?

You can use your current induction cookware on Ztove cooktops as you normally would.

Your normal cookware does not have built-in temperature sensors, so you cannot see and control the temperature of the cookware without buying extra equipment.

The Ztove system integrates with the Weber iGrill Mini or Weber iGrill 2 thermometers from Weber. This integration allows you to control the temperature of your normal pots and pans.

Why do you use an app to set temperatures and not the cooktop?

We have experienced that cooking with temperatures requires a little shift in the mindset while cooking. To ease the transition from normal cooktops to Ztove cooktops we have developed the Ztove app to provide functionalities and recipes to get started.

This includes temperature suggestions for common ingredients as well as thoroughly developed recipes that will develop your cooking skills to the next level in no time.

Can I use Ztove without the app?

Yes.

You can use default temperatures.

Default temperatures are the temperatures to which your cookware is automatically set. The default temperature can be used when you switch on your cooktop and have not opened the app.

You can choose individual default temperatures for each piece of cookware or use our pre-made settings. Our default settings are 175 °C for pans and 150 °C for pots.

Default temperature is a good way to make sure that your food does not get overheated no matter if the app is in use or not.

Will the app work on my device?

Ztove is available on iOS and Android and works on most devices with Bluetooth Low Energy. We recommend that devices use a minimum of iOS 11 or Android 9.

If you have a very old phone that, for example, does not support Bluetooth properly, you may experience problems connecting the Ztove system and the app.

You can use the smartphone you already have without any problems. However, some people choose to dedicate a fixed iPad/tablet to the kitchen.

Ztove works without an internet connection. However, to access recipes internet access is needed.

Can I use the Ztove cookware on a normal cooktop?

Ztove pans and pots work on all induction cooktops. If your cooktop is not upgraded with Ztove technology, it will not be possible to control the temperature through the app. Therefore Ztove Cookware is not intended to be used with a normal cooktop.

Although you cannot control the temperature, you can monitor the temperature in the app and adjust the heat continuously by adjusting the general power settings on the cooktop. This process allows you to use the app as a thermometer for your cookware.

This is currently a beta feature.

Can I try the system before I buy it?

Can Ztove cookware be put in the fridge/freezer?

Our cookware can be placed both in the refrigerator and in the freezer.

Can Ztove's cookware go in the dishwasher?

Our cookware cannot go in the dishwasher as there is a risk that it will damage the battery and electronics.

Can Ztove's cookware go in the oven?

Our cookware is not oven safe as the electronics in the handle cannot withstand high temperatures.

How long does the non-stick last?

Ztove’s non-stick pans last for much longer than normal non-stick pans.

The non-stick coating has a reputation for breaking easily. This problem is often due to overheating of the pans.

If your non-stick pan gets above 260 °C, you risk breaking the coating and, worst case releasing unwanted fluorides into your food.

With the Ztove system, we have a maximum temperature of 250 °C. Therefore overheating is not a problem, as long as it is used with a Ztove cooktop. As a result of this our pans last significantly longer.

We have only seen non-stick pans break using metal utensils and other materials that can scrape off the coating.

FAQ

About cooking

Questions about cooking with Ztove

How do I know which temperature to use?

In the app, you will find a ‘quick guide’ that gives you an overview of what the different temperatures can do. You can view it here.

You will also find a recipe universe where you can see exactly how to best cook different dishes at certain temperatures.

We recommend you try a few recipes from the app, and then you will have a good feel for how to use temperature control for other dishes.

If there is a dish you are unsure about, you can always write to our support team, who will respond within minutes every day between 9 am and 9 pm.

Can Ztove automate simple cooking tasks?

Programmes allow you to automate simple tasks.

A good example is the popcorn program.

Popcorn pops at 180 °C. To pop as much corn as possible while avoiding burnt popcorn, it is a good idea first to heat all popcorn to just below 180 °C and then increase the heat significantly for a short time.

We tested the times and temperatures and created a popcorn programme. Pour the corn, salt and butter (or oil) into the pot, and press ‘play.’

After 4 minutes, you will have great tasting popcorn!

You can also make your own programmes in the app.

Can Ztove replace my sous vide?

Yes. You can make sous vide with a vacuum and plastic.

You can also make it without plastic. We have tested both and experienced just as good results. You can find recipes and inspiration for both approaches in the app.

Can Ztove replace a deep fryer?

Yes, it can. You can keep the oil at the desired temperature, so you do not burn anything, but you do not get “soggy” results either.

Ztove also provides higher output than the average deep fryer. So Ztove actually holds the temperature better when food (especially frozen food) is lowered into the pot.

In the app, you can find several different deep-frying recipes.

Can I temper chocolate with Ztove?

Yes, you can. The pots are really good for tempering chocolate. Just follow the procedure described below.

Add 2/3 of the chopped chocolate to the pot, set the temperature to 50 °C and melt the chocolate, stirring gently. Remove the pot from the stove.

Then add the remaining 1/3 of the chocolate, stirring gently. When the remainder of the chocolate has melted, it is tempered and ready to use.

Tip:

For this tempering method, use chocolate that has already been tempered (almost all chocolate you buy is tempered). Feel free to use chocolate nibs or chop the chocolate yourself.

Make sure that everything is completely dry. The slightest bit of water on the utensils can cause white spots to appear on the chocolate once it has set.

Can you recommend a place to learn more about cooking with temperature control?

Yes! We have explored cooking with temperature control since 2017 and we believe to know a lot about it. Check out our youtube channel here.

My water starts boiling when the temperature is set to 103 ºC and not at 100 ºC. Why is that?

The temperature you can set with Ztove is the target temperature on the bottom surface of the pan. This means that the temperature is not showing the temperature of the food.

This is the same as in an oven – if you set your oven to 200 ºC it is not certain that the temperature of the food you have in the oven is 200 ºC.

In sous-vide mode, we compensate for this temperature difference. We can do that because we know the physical properties of water and know our cookware.
